Get Ready: Microsoft Authenticator Will Remove Password Storage in August

If you use Microsoft Authenticator to store your passwords, take note: starting August 2025, the app will delete all your saved passwords. Instead, Microsoft is pushing users toward passkeys. It is a safer way to sign in without having to memorize or reuse your favorite go-to passwords.

Please note: While password storage is going away, the MFA code feature will still be available in Authenticator.

Why the Change?

Most of us reuse passwords or use obvious hints like pet names. Although it’s convenient, it makes it easier for scammers to access your accounts. That’s why Microsoft’s solution is passkeys.

What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern login credential that uses your device’s biometric data (like a fingerprint or Face ID) or a secure PIN to verify your identity. Unlike passwords, they aren’t stored on remote servers—just on your personal device. This makes them far less vulnerable to phishing, password-guessing attempts, or data breaches.

They are more secure, faster to use, and you don’t have to remember them.

Key Dates to Know

June 2025 – You can no longer add new passwords in Microsoft Authenticator

July 2025 – The autofill function for passwords goes away

August 2025 – All stored passwords will be deleted

How to Set Up a Passkey

Setting up a passkey is simple:

1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone

2. Tap on your account and select “Set up a passkey”

3. Log in with your current credentials and follow the prompts

Once you’re done, you’ll be automatically asked to use your passkey the next time you sign in.

Don’t wait until the last minute. Export your passwords if needed and get ahead of this change.

Please note: Not all websites will support passkeys, so you may not be able to log on using that method. Our suggestion? Use a password manager, it’s just as convenient and secure as passkeys.
